Patients in the Leicestershire/ Derbyshire/ Nottinghamshire areas can now benefit from a leading new treatment for long standing and troublesome tendon pain, here at EMPC. This is one of the most exciting new technologies to emerge in recent years that will help patients with chronic long standing painful tendon problems and conditions such as plantar fasciitis.
Anyone who has suffered an injury knows that chronic pain can affect your quality of life, performance at work, enjoyment of regular exercise and ability to take part in sports. Clients in and around Loughborough, Leicestershire, can now benefit from this new and effective technology for the treatment of a range of conditions, which until now, has only been available in a small number of Consultant led private hospital clinics, where access has been limited.
Shockwave Therapy can provide relief and advanced recovery in situations where the healing process has stalled or failed to respond to standard therapeutic intervention. The use of Shockwave Therapy has been found to safely and successfully treat a range of longstanding musculoskeletal conditions, supported by a wealth of scientific evidence and is now recommended by NICE, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence. This is a strong, non surgical treatment for many conditions resistant to other forms of therapy.
Shockwave Therapy treatment is a very successful second line treatment for patients who fail to respond to appropriate physiotherapy. It is a non-surgical treatment, and works by delivering impulses of energy, targeted to specific damaged tissues. This increases the blood flow within the affected area, stimulates cell regeneration and healing, and decreases local factors which can cause pain.
The effectiveness of the treatment for specific conditions has been reviewed and accepted by both NICE (UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) and the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration).
The therapy involves electrical production of shockwaves which are delivered through the skin by the shockwave machine. The intensity of these shockwaves are carefully calibrated to produce a chemical stimulus to healing and restore tissue to a state that makes it respond well to rehabilitation.
The shockwaves are felt as pulses which are a little uncomfortable but not painful. The physiiotherapist applying your treatment will start with a low level of intensity and increase this to a point where you feel comfortable.
Many patients experience an improvement in symptoms almost immediately following treatment. This effect is usually (but not always) temporary, and is associated with the analgesic (pain relieving) effect resulting from hyper-stimulation of the tissue by Shockwave therapy.
It takes several days for injuries to begin to heal, and many patients see an improvement before the end of the second week. Depending on the diagnosis, the healing process may take several, but pain relief often precedes complete healing. Clinical studies suggest a success rate of 70-90% in even the most stubborn cases. This is a strong success rate in terms of most medical interventions.
